Machupicchu the sacred city of Machu Picchu (in Quechua: old mountain) is the greatest Inca masterpiece. Incredibly daring and inventive, it was built on the most difficult, wild and inaccessible mountain area available. It is known world-wide not only for its impressive and unique ruins, but also for its unusual location on the edge of an abyss, from which one can appreciate the vigorous waters of the Urubamba river.

Travel Program

Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco - km 83 - Llactapata
Pick-up from the hotel at 6.00-6.30am, before travelling by bus to Km 82, from where the trek begins. Along the walk, we will be able to see the archaeological site of Llactapata .

Day 02: Llactapata - Pacaymayo
At 6:00am, we will have breakfast before setting out on the walk. Again, we will be able to observe the beauty and peaceful landscape of the Inca Trail, noticing the change of climate in the Andean High Plateau until arriving at the highest point of the trail, 4200 m / 13,779 ft above sea level, a site called Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman) where we will take a short break. Afterwards, we will descend, having lunch halfway down the walk. After lunch, we will continue the trek until we arrive at the second camp, called Pacaymayo where we will have dinner and camp for the night. The day’s trek will last 7-8 hours.

Day 03: Pacaymayo - Wiñaywayna
We will wake up around 7:00am, to enjoy a delicious breakfast which our cooks will have prepared for us. Having had breakfast, we will continue the trek. This will be a special day because we will visit the archaeological sites of Runcuracay, Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca. Along the way, we will have a lunch break. Our third campsite will be in either Phuyupatamarca or Wiñaywayna. (This is subject to the number of spaces available in the reservation office of INRENA).

The walk to Phuyupatamarca lasts approximately 6-7 hours. If the overnight stay is Wiñaywayna, from Phuyupatamarca the section of trek will be approximately 3 hours.

Day 02: Wiñaywayna - Machupicchu - Cusco
We will wake up in the early hours, between 3 and 4 am. After breakfast, we will begin our last section of the walk, arriving at Intipuncu (Sun Gate). From here, we will catch our first glimpse of the impressive Machupicchu arriving between 7 and 8am. We will have a short rest before then entering the sacred site and having our guided tour of approximately 2 hours. The tourist will have enough time to enjoy the beauty and mystery of Machupicchu. Then we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes to catch the train back (train times will vary according to the season). The trains terminate in Ollantaytambo from where there will be a bus transfer to Cusco.
