Nevado Mateo is a mountain of easy access, very popular among people visiting Huaraz. It is perfect for beginners and good for acclimatization before climbing higher mountains. Summit of Mateo has beautiful views over the highest Peruvian mountains, such as Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Ulta, Contrahierbas and others.

Itinerary

Day 01: Huaraz – Tunel (Punta Olimpica) – Mateo summit 5150 m / 16,896 ft
We leave from Huaraz at 6 am. Driving to Punta Olimpica, we pass various smaller cities and villages, such as Marcara and Carhuaz. We start our hike before the tunel, going up in the direction of Mateo mountain.
Before reaching the glacier, we pass a moraine and then start climbing with 30°to 45°inclination to reach the summit. We enjoy magnificent views over many snow peaked mountains and mountain lakes. We descend on the same road. 3-4 ascend. 2,5 h descend.
